The main conceptional idea behind „Ex-Libris“ was to create a collection of songs that are linked to a book or to an author, which have a very special meaning to VERNEY 1826’s mastermind Lionel Verney. In collaboration with the Italian Gothic Band Victim’s Ball, mezzo sopranist Anna Aliena and the German neoclassical project Schattenspiel 12 tracks can be found on „Ex Libris“ with a wide musical diversity ranging from Neoclassical parts, Martial Industrial and Dark Ambient to Neofolk. All these different influences make the album an outstanding and timeless release.
„The Beggar’s Opera“ refers to the satiric works of John Gay, who caricatures the life and politics of England in the early 18th century.
„Henry IV“ is a homage to the immortal characters of William Shakespeare.
„Lúthien“ is based upon one of the most beautiful love stories ever written, the tale of Lúthien and Beren by J. R. R. Tolkien.
„To The Moon“ takes us back to the age of wonders, when the moon was still unreachable for mankind. This story of human ascension and disaster is seen through the eyes of Jules Verne’s hero, Impey Barbicane.
„Mr. & Mrs De Winter“ are both a homage to the great Daphne Du Maurier and her haunting tale of „Rebecca“.
„Fireflies“ recalls the last days of the 2nd World War and the sad story of the Grave of the Fireflies by Akiyuki Nosaka.
„L’Eternal Adam“ is an obeisance for the dark, fantastic tale by Jules & Michel Verne.
„Alles Still“. The lyrics of this song were entirely written by the German poet Theodor Fontane, most famous for his History of the Mark Brandenburg.
"Der Gefangene von Chillon" is an excerpt of Lord Byron's poem about a man imprisoned in Château de Chillon.
„Penitenziagite!“ is inspired by Umberto Eco’s “Il Nome Della Rosa” and the cruel fate of Fra Dolcino.
