PUISSANCE War On CD. Digipak
Due to aesthetic aspects such as the design of their lettering and Söderlund's collaboration with various metal bands, Puissance is sometimes associated with black metal. However, the musicians do not use any analog instruments, but limit themselves to the genre-typical use of samplers and computer-generated sounds. Stylistically, Puissance moves between minimalist, very militant sounds (Totalitarian Hearts, Evolution (Early Version)) and "sacral-like sound[s] with what can almost be described as shy, soft spoken vocals" (In Shining Armor, Whirlpool of Flames). On the most recent album, Grace of God, the songs feature much higher quality production and softer composition; at times the sound recalls pop music elements à la Dernière Volonté (Walls of Freedom, In Death). Lyrically, Puissance is "under the guiding star of a fundamental misanthropy - another link to the black metal scene. Almost all of the tracks deal with misanthropic themes; from the violent subjugation of humanity (Command and Conquer) to its complete extinction through a campaign of annihilation out of boredom (Totalitarian Hearts), nuclear weapons (Hail the Mushroom Cloud), or the evolutionary drive towards self-extinction (Evolution). Apart from the first demo cassette Krig from 1995, all lyrics are in English. A music video was shot in 2015 for the track Conspiracy from the album Grace of God, which visualizes the leitmotif conspiracy theories in a nightmarish collage around singer Söderlund.
